Humane Society of Washington County to host 11th Annual Polar Bear Plunge

Boonsboro, Md. — The Humane Society of Washington County announces the 11th annual Polar Bear Plunge, to be held on Jan. 18, 2014 at Greenbrier State Park in Boonsboro, Md.

“We encourage those who are concerned about the welfare of animals, enjoy supporting a worthy cause and those who like to have fun to register for this event. The Humane Society of Washington County counts on the generous support from individuals from all over the region for the success of this event each year,“ said Michael Lausen, executive director of the Humane Society of Washington County.

The Polar Bear Plunge is the largest fundraising event hosted by the Humane Society of Washington County. Participants gather waterside, often in interesting outfits, to plunge into icy water to show their support for the Humane Society. All proceeds benefit the Humane Society of Washington County. The proceeds allow the 501C3 nonprofit to continue to shelter animals, fund community spay and neuter programs and to provide education programs that benefit Washington County residents.

Each year, 5,700 animals relay on help from the Humane Society of Washington County. Last year the event fetched more than $11,000.

The event marks a change in date and location from previous years; something the organizers say is a positive thing. “We’re excited about this new chapter for the Polar Bear Plunge. We’ve outgrown the previous location on the Potomac River in Williamsport,” said Lausen. “Greenbrier State Park is a beautiful property, and will better accommodate the growing number of registrants that we have each year”.

According to Lausen, the event is expected to draw over 400 participants, many of who make it an annual tradition. The new location is also expected to allow all the participants to plunge into the water at once, which wasn’t possible at the Potomac River location in Williamsport.

The Humane Society of Washington County Polar Plunge shouldn’t be confused with the Town of Williamsport Polar Bear Plunge event, which will be hosted on the same day and location of the previous Humane Society of Washington County. Individuals looking to support the Humane Society of Washington County, please take note of the date/location change to ensure registration of the correct event.

“We’ve been looking forward to it all year long. We absolutely can’t wait,” added Lausen.
