Land of Lakes
Consider Frederick County’s generous great outdoors and you might first think of mountains, maybe farmland or even the rivers. But what about the dozen or so lakes that dot the landscape? They, too, have earned a picturesque place in the county’s rich natural mosaic.
Like all lakes in Maryland, Frederick County’s are entirely manmade—a combination of Ice Age realities and the desire of residents to create their own kind of still water, be it for drinking, fishing or recreation. But mostly, the lakes provide an aesthetic benefit that can only be enjoyed on a lazy afternoon spent walking around their banks.
On the following pages, take in views of many of Frederick County’s lakes that you might have never seen before— the kinds of scenes where you can stare deep into water that reveals your own reflection inside nature’s beauty.
