Howe says an especially tasty sandwich to enjoy with a beer is the one named for her—“Pam’s Pepperoni,” a combination of turkey, pepperoni, provolone, lettuce, tomato and ranch dressing on a roll that’s baked in-house, just like all the breads they serve. www.7thstreetsandwich.com
West Frederick Market Moves East
With the new growing season comes a new location for the West Frederick Farmers Market. Originally located at 800 Oak St., the market is now at the Frederick Fairgrounds on East Patrick Street from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. “We’re really excited about the move,” says Rachel Armistead, a member of the market’s executive board and a vendor selling sauerkraut, ginger beer and other products from her Sweet Farms operation.
A Saturday farmers market already exists at the fairgrounds, but with the blending of West Frederick there are now 30 to 35 vendors with offerings such as honey, eggs, meat, seedlings, vegetables, fruits, wood-fired pizza and baked goods, including a baker specializing in pie and another in gluten-free products. “The fairgrounds are a symbol of local agriculture,” Armistead says, adding that the spot with its shade trees and picnic tables may encourage shoppers to sit and stay a spell. A Café Catering to the Lunch Bunch
It may be a bit off the beaten path, but Canapés 550 Grab and Go Café, 550 Highland St., Suite 103, is worth searching out for a delicious lunch that won’t kill your wallet. The location is also home to Canapés Catering, a popular choice for weddings, fundraising and corporate events as well as parties; the café is a logical spin-off.
Situated in a tech park, the aroma of cooking food from the catering company had the neighbors practically begging for food, says Terri Perry, an employee of the business owned by M.L. Carroll, so Canapés obliged. Customers can eat at the café or take their food to go. Although known for lunch, the café also serves breakfast during business hours, which are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday to Friday. The menu has a wide variety of soups, salads and sandwiches and a substantial meal can be had for $8. Weekly specials come with a theme—when it was opening season for baseball, for example, it was a menu with a ballpark vibe. www.canapescatering.com
