Throwback Thursday: Barbershop Politics

With campaign season heating up in Frederick County, this week’s Throwback Thursday photo takes us back to 1960, when state Del. Charles McCurdy Mathias Jr. stopped at his local barber shop, Simpson Brothers, at 6 W. Church St. Mathias was campaigning for reelection to the House of Delegates (he would later serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate) and was known to stop in Simpson Brothers for “good luck” haircuts before each election. Pictured with Mathias is barber Clarence R. Simpson and customer Charles Alburner of Woodsboro.
